- /sʌlfə daɪˈɒksaɪd / (say sulfuh duy'oksuyd)
a colourless gas or liquid with a strong pungent odour which is non-combustible and is soluble in water, ether and alcohol; it is used as an oxidising and reducing agent, and for various industrial uses; when dissolved in water it gives sulphurous acid.
Also, sulfur dioxide.
Ninety-nine per cent of sulphur dioxide in air is caused by human activity in which sulphur is burnt creating an oxide. The gas is one of the air pollutants that can affect human health and cause acid rain. However, in Australia, it is generally at an acceptably low level in urban areas. Sulphur dioxide is most commonly produced in the processing of materials such as coal, oil and gas for the generation of electricity. It is also present in vehicle emissions. However implementation of fuel quality standards in Australia has successively reduced the contribution of sulphur dioxide from this source. Leaded petrol was phased out in 2002. The sulphur content in diesel in 1999 was 1300 parts per million, down to 10 parts per million in 2009. ABS statistics for 2009 showed the percentage of sulphur dioxide due to vehicle exhausts was very small (between 1 and 2 per cent). The main source of sulphur dioxide emissions was industrial activity including copper, lead, zinc, nickel and silver processing.
